Do you work at a museum? If so, are you looking for new ways to mount artwork or clean your display cases? We’ve got the solution for you: neodymium magnets. In fact, there are multiple magnetic applications you can implement in your museum. In this blog post, we’ve rounded up some of the best ways you can use magnets in your museum.

Cleaning Display Cases

You can use magnets to simultaneously clean both sides of the display case glass. This concept is similar to cleaning an aquarium with two magnets without emptying the water to clean the inside of the glass. In a museum, you can use two ceramic or neodymium magnets and place a cloth in between the magnets without having to move the artwork. By moving one of the magnets, you can simultaneously clean both sides of the display case. This method will not only keep display cases clean, but it will also protect the artwork from being damaged if the glass is cleaned using traditional methods. Additionally, you can custom order ceramic or neodymium magnets in different sizes and strengths depending on the size of the display case.

Keep Curtains Open or Closed

Daylight is extremely important in museums— you want the artwork to be “lit” in a gallery, but you don’t want the artwork to be sensitive to heat, infrared radiation, or ultraviolet radiation from sunlight exposure. One way to combat this problem and adjust the lighting is with a bendable magnet on window curtains. To keep curtains open, place the curtain between the magnetic clip and close it shut to prevent the curtain from moving throughout the day. On the other hand, you can also use bendable magnets to clasp the edge of your curtain together to keep the exhibit dark and free from direct sunlight. Additionally, if you want to block off or close an exhibit with a curtain, you can also use bendable magnets. Place the curtain between the bendable magnet to keep the curtain secured.

Mounting Artwork

Because of their varying shapes, sizes, and strengths, neodymium magnets are ideal for mounting artwork in museums. For instance, The Museum of Fine Arts (MFA) in Houston, Texas experiments with magnets to display their artwork, especially for artwork on paper. According to the museum, they use magnets because “magnetic mounts are reusable, easily installed, relatively inexpensive, and with careful handling, safe for art.” Learn more about how the MFA used magnets to mount the artwork in their museum.  By inserting metal screws into the wall and embedding rectangular magnets into a mat-board, you can easily mount artwork. (Note: the quantity of rectangular magnets you need depends on the weight of the piece.) By doing this, you can also see the exact location of the artwork, which is also useful in determining the layout of the exhibit or gallery.

Magnetic Signage

In previous blog posts, we’ve talked about using magnetic signage in various industries, such as manufacturing and retail. Similarly, you can implement magnetic signage throughout a museum. Whether it be outside the museum or inside an exhibit or gallery, magnetic signage can be very useful. With neodymium disc, bar, or adhesive magnets, you can attach signage to a magnetic surface. You can use magnetic signage throughout exhibits, as artwork labels, to direct visitors, and more. Not only is magnetic signage durable, both inside and outside, but it is also cost-effective because you can easily move it with minimal expenses and effort.
