‘Tis the season for all things creepy and scary! Halloween is right around the corner, and what better way to decorate your kitchen fridge or other magnetic surfaces than a DIY faux insect magnet? This may be the one time that insects such as beetles, cockroaches, and spiders are welcome in a home. If you’re hosting a Halloween party, your guests will be sure to either love the magnetic bugs or squirm at the sight of them, but they certainly won’t go unnoticed! Creepy-crawlers play an essential role in the Halloween aesthetic and this DIY not only checks off that box, but also makes bugs look chic. The black paint mixed with the liquid gold leaf-coated bug turns this craft into a one-of-a-kind piece. Supplies You’ll Need:
  • Plastic bugs. Any type of bug will do, however, beetles look the most realistic.
  • Black paint. You can use any color you like, but black makes the gold-coated insects really stand out.
  • Liquid gold leaf.
  • Small wooden plaques. These can be found at any local craft store.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Hot glue gun.
  • 9mm x 3mm disc magnets.
Steps:
  1. Lightly sand wooden plaque.
  2. Paint the wooden plaque with the black paint. You will most likely need two coats of paint to achieve the solid black look. Let paint dry in between coats and let dry completely before moving on to next step.
  3. Apply the golden leaf to the top of the faux bugs, this will be the part of bug that will be showing. Let the bugs dry completely. You do not want to paint the bottom of the bugs in liquid gold leaf because the glue will not set when attaching the bug to the plaque.
  4. Use the hot glue gun to glue the bugs to the wooden plaque. Make sure you determine the center of each plaque before you glue down your insect.
  5. Use the hot glue to glue the magnets on the back of each wooden plaque. Let everything dry overnight.
  6. Add the magnets to the fridge and let the Halloween festivities commence!
