Bring out the fake cobwebs, pumpkins and skeletons from your closet, because it is that time of year again-Halloween time! We like to get into the spooky spirit of Halloween by decorating everything in sight. If you also share an affinity for the scariest day of the year, then here are some creative ways to turn your home into your very own haunted house!
Halloween Hideout
Use a magnetic latch system to hide a room with a secret door. This magnet project is great because you can use it even after the holiday is over as a cover for your very own secret hideaway or “man cave”. If you’d like to build your own, there are some neat tutorials on
Instructables.
Witch’s Cauldron
A self-stirring witch’s cauldron is a creative way to welcome the trick or treaters to your door. You can build your own using a similar system to the one found in magnetic stirrers. ScareFX shows
here how they created their own using a DC motor design. You can even add in a little fog, a witch and some moody lighting to amplify the wickedness!
Hanging Ghosts
Wrap some white sheets around a ball or balloon and tie it around with some string. Then you can paint a face on it and hang it up with a hook magnet for a scary decoration.
Bug Magnets
Plant bugs all over your house to scare your visitors. Create them with some neodymium magnets, glue and plastic bug sets.
Levitating Crystal Ball
Magnetic levitation could be used to float a crystal ball like magic! It is actually science-but your visitors don’t need to know that! Magnets can levitate and be used to levitate other objects, which is often referred to as
diamagnetism. To create a levitating crystal ball you can either buy a premade levitating object such as a
globe lamp and repurpose it or
create your own device with some magnets, a stand and some other simple supplies.
Glow-in-the-Dark Paint and LED Throwies
Lastly, glow in the dark paint and some
LED throwies can be used to tie your Haunted House together. Plus, they can come in pretty handy, especially for your outdoor decor. You can paint globes or some other objects and hang them around your house for some scary lighting. LED throwies are literally thrown, hence their name and are often used by street and guerilla artists for large outdoor work. They are also relatively inexpensive and easy to make-just tape rare earth magnets to a battery-connected LED.
If these six decor DIYs have put you in the Halloween spirit, then feel free to try them out in your own house. Do you have other Halloween decor ideas? If you’re using magnets to create your own Haunted House this year, then we’d love to hear about it. Feel free to share your magnet projects with us in the comments or
