Some of our magnets are strong, really strong. If you’ve ever ordered any neodymium magnets from us, or have simply experimented with high powered magnets, you know that once opposite poles attract, it can be tough to separate them. Also, getting in the way of two attracting poles is dangerous and could result in broken glass or bones. When using strong magnets it is important to follow safety rules and tips. Below are some tips that we have compiled for separating strong magnets.

Plastic Divider

Our magnet sets often come with plastic dividers that make separation easier. We would recommend keeping these handy to provide a buffer between magnets when they are not in use.

Slide, Don’t Pull

When it comes to magnets, it is always better to slide them apart laterally than to try to pull them apart. Although you may be strong, the magnetic pull force could be stronger. Sliding them is easier, because you are gradually pulling the attracting poles from one another. Plus, with this method, the chance of placing a finger or body part in between the two magnets is lower.

Hand and Assisted Separation

For most smaller, lower strength magnets you can simply separate them with your hands. However, with stronger magnets, you may need the help of a nonmagnetic wedge. You can simply use a wedge of wood, place it in between the two magnets and divide them.

Keep Magnets Divided

Once divided, make sure to put the magnets at an ample distance apart, so that they will not be attracted to one another. Magnets can pull each other through the air and the brittleness of neodymium magnets will cause them to shatter upon impact. The chance of shattering increases as the distance increases. You can also try using magnets that are of a lesser power or that have specialty coatings for specific projects. If you are doing a craft project and want a lower power, try out one of our specialty coating magnets.
