3 Magnetic Research Institutions Changing the World
We love learning about new and exciting magnet-related findings and we hope you do, too! Always on the search for new information and discoveries, we keep a close eye on the leading magnetic research facilities to see what they’re up to. Today on our blog, we’ve rounded up a few of the most significant magnetic research institutions in America and highlighted some of their findings to give you a little sample of what these labs do and what their contributions to science have been.
Fermilab
Since 1967, Fermilab has been working to answer the questions swirling about the universe and create a better understanding of magnetism and how it affects the world around us. Located in Batavia, Illinois, they collaborate with over 20 countries to solve the mysteries of magnetism.
Many magnetic milestones and revelations over the years can be attributed to Fermilab such as the discovery of the Higgs boson particle after over half a century of searching. Two essential parts of a theoretical model known as the Standard Model were discovered by Fermilab, the top quark and the bottom quark. Without these monumental discoveries by Fermilab, our understanding of the magnetic world would be much narrower. MagLab
The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, or MagLab for short, is the largest and highest-powered magnet laboratory in the world. Thanks to funding from the National Science Foundation and the State of Florida, thousands of scientists from dozens of countries are able to gather at the MagLab and conduct research as well as use the powerful and unique magnets at the facility, all for free!
MagLab holds the Guinness World Record for the highest field for a continuous field magnet, the record for highest field for a superconducting magnet, and many others. Over the last 20 years, the Magnet Science & Technology division has discovered more than 20 magnet systems. When their 32 Tesla All Super-Conducting Magnet Project is complete, they will hold the record for the strongest superconducting magnet on the planet. Check out more findings from Maglab here.
Ames Laboratory
Contractor-operated and owned by the US Department of Energy, Ames Laboratory has been operating for over 65 years and has accomplished much in that time. Scientists at the lab have discovered magnetic properties in iron that are usually reserved only for rare-earth elements. The lab is also responsible for the creation of a magnetic alloy that is a cheaper alternative to traditional sintered magnets usually used in cars and wind turbines.
