Art Meets Science With Artist’s Magnetic Clay Ceramic Creations
It is truly amazing when science and art overlap. This was recently the case when a Dutch designer, named Jólan van der Wiel, created futuristic ceramics using magnetic clay and magnets. The pieces are reminiscent of a science fiction film or alien life forms with their gravity defying structures and metallic coloring. However, the science behind their creation is real and applies some basic rules of magnetism.
One of the details that make these creations so ingenious, is that they are not just made of clay that happens to be magnetic. They are actually molded into these interesting shapes with a hanging electromagnet and gravity. This isn’t the first time the designer has used magnetism for the sake of art either. Teaming up with fashion designer, Iris van Herpen, they produced magnetic dresses.
Wiel is envisioning bigger things for this clay too. According to Wired, he sees these sculptures possibly progressing into large scale architectural structures. We’re interested to see what the designer will come up with next. If past projects are any reflection, it will most likely be an intriguing visual combination of science and art!
There are also other artists like Wiel that have looked to nature and magnetism to inspire and assist them in their work: Here are just a few examples:
If you or someone else you know is creating art with the help of science and magnetism, we’d love to hear about it! Feel free to share your stories in the comments or on our Facebook page!
