Coin purses are a convenient and cute way to store change and other small objects and access them quickly. When you need to grab some change at the store or while boarding the bus, you can get to it easily with your own DIY felt coin purse. In this blog, we explain how to make a basic coin purse with some felt, glue and some other inexpensive supplies. And we explain how to attach a magnetic closure onto it to keep its contents safe and secure.

Supplies

  • Felt pieces (assorted colors)
  • Thread
  • Sewing Needle
  • Scissors
  • Two small disc magnets
  • Glue
  • Buttons or old jewelry (optional)

Steps

  1. Cut out two rectangular pieces of felt using colors of your choice. Make one rectangle shorter than the other. The smaller rectangle will serve as the pouch.
  2. Line up the felt pieces. Sew the smaller rectangle on top of the bigger one. Sew the sides and the bottom, but leave the top open.
  3. Now you have your basic pouch. You can decorate it by gluing on striped felt pieces, sequins or other emblems. We recommend gluing a button or piece of jewelry on the outward facing part of the top flap. You can also customize the shape of the top part by cutting it.
  4. Once you have customized your coin purse, its time to attach the magnetic closures. To do this, you can either sew in the magnets with this tutorial, or you can simply glue the two magnets on the top flap and inside the pouch, where the flap would close.
It’s important to make sure when doing this that you line up the magnets perfectly, and that the opposite poles of each magnet are glued to face each other. Otherwise, the magnets will not be attracted to another if the poles are not correctly placed.
