Forgetting your house or apartment key is never a fun time. Luckily, magnets are once again here to help. With just a few small disc magnets and a trip to your local hardware store, you can create a sneaky hide-a-key system to help you out the next time you’re in a pinch or need the neighbors to water your plants. This DIY, magnetic door knocker key hider is a snap to make! It’s important to note that no hide-a-key is every completely hidden. We recommend using this door knocker key hider only if you have an alarm system for your home that you can disarm once entering, While this door knocker key hider works best with metal doors, you can alter the design to work with wooden doors as well.

Assemble Your Magnetic Door Knocker Key Hider

What You’ll Need
  • A door knocker in any color or style you prefer. You’ll need to make sure it has a hollow back.
  • Two 3/4” x 1/16” Adhesive Disc Magnets
  • Electrical Tape
  • A copy of your key (make a copy while you’re picking up supplies if you don’t have one).
Steps
  1. Peel the back off of the adhesive disc magnets and stick them to the back of the door knocker. One on the top, one on the bottom. If you’re using a heavier door knocker, you made need additional magnets to hold it in place.
  2. Place your key in the hollow middle of the door knocker and secure with electrical tape. We recommend covering up the entire key for a little extra hiding.
  3. Place your door knocker on your metal door.
That’s it! You’ve now got a convenient, yet secret magnetic door knocker key hider to help you out the next time you’re in a jam. If your door isn’t made out of metal, or the magnets don’t attach, simply take two more adhesive magnets and stick them right to your door, making sure they’re lined up with the magnets on your door knocker. Carefully place the knocker on the door magnets and you’re all set! Whichever way you assemble your door knocker, you can be sure it’ll stay put. These magnets have a pull force of nearly 5 lbs.
