DIY Magnets: Easter Eggs
Decorating eggs in festive colors and patterns is one of the most well-known Easter traditions of all time. Some experts say that the tradition started as far back as the 13th century. There are several possible reasons why eggs in particular are associated with the holiday. One idea is that since eggs symbolize new life, it could represent the beginning of the spring season or have a more religious connection to Jesus’ resurrection. The practice of decorating them is said to have started because eggs were often forbidden food during Lent, so people would decorate them, then eat them in celebration.
Nowadays, they are more a symbol of the Easter holiday and egg hunting. This Easter you can create your own eggs in the form of some DIY magnets.
How to Make Magnets for Easter
Supplies
- Polymer clay or salt dough
- Craft paint
- Rolling pin
- Egg shaped stencils
- X-acto knife
- Glue
- Small magnets for crafts
Steps
- Knead your polymer clay until it is easy to stretch. You can either work with white polymer clay or salt dough and paint it after baking or work with pastel colored clay. We recommend white and using paint for a fun Easter DIY family activity.
- Roll out the clay or dough on a nonstick, flat surface until it is about ¼ inch thick.
- Once it is all rolled out, take your egg stencils and press them into the clay until you get all of your eggs. If you don’t have a stencil, you can cut one out with a thick piece of paper and cut around it with an X-acto knife.
- Place the cut out eggs on a nonstick baking sheet. Bake in the oven for about 5 minutes on 250 degrees. Note that temperatures vary based on what type of clay is used, so it is important to refer to the baking instructions on package for exact times and temperatures.
- Take out of the oven and set on cooling rack for 15 to minutes or until cool.
- Once cool, you can start painting the designs on your eggs and let dry.
- When dry, turn them over and use glue to attach small magnets for crafts.
