Drones Are Driving Demand for Rare Earth Magnets
Rare earth magnets in drones may be small components, but their role is growing as manufacturers scale autonomous aircraft for commercial, industrial, and defense applications.
A recent example is a new initiative from MP Materials that highlights just how significant that demand could become. In July 2026, MP Materials announced Project Swarm, an initiative designed to aggregate future rare earth magnet demand from U.S. and allied drone and motor manufacturers.
The goal is to give manufacturers access to future production capacity at MP Materials' planned 10X magnet manufacturing facility in Northlake, Texas. Participating companies can reserve capacity while refining their magnet requirements as their technologies develop.
Why coordinate demand for magnets in drones across multiple manufacturers? Individually, a drone manufacturer may require a relatively small volume of magnets, particularly during development. Collectively, however, the industry could represent substantial future demand.
MP Materials offers one useful illustration. Assuming 50 grams of magnet material per drone, producing one million drones would require approximately 50 metric tons of magnets.
The Role of High-Performance Magnets in Drones
Permanent magnets help electric motors and actuators provide the power, efficiency, and precise movement required for electric flight. For drone designers, these characteristics matter because propulsion efficiency, weight, payload capacity, maneuverability, and flight time are closely connected.

The company reported in August that it had already executed subscription agreements with multiple U.S. and allied customers.
