From that family beach vacation you took when your kids were young to that once-in-a-lifetime dream trip to Europe last year, researchers from the University of Liverpool are discovering the surprising link between recollecting these incredible experiences and simple fridge magnets. While many travelers pick up this common trinket from the gift shop without even thinking twice, a new study directly links memory recall to these simple souvenirs. 

The Science Behind Magnet Memory Recall 

As cited in the article, Annals of Tourism Research, one participant in the study notes, “I don't tend to take a picture of anything… I'll just get a fridge magnet at the end, and I can remember it all from [that]…” In this way, they leave the core memories of the day or overall trip to the power of a tiny fridge magnet. The vast majority of participants who have collected fridge magnets over the years stated that specific memories are directly evoked every time they open their fridges. While photos hold a singular moment in time, fridge magnets have the capacity to hold numerous memories within the bounds of their often colorful display.

Dr. John Byrom, Associated Dean at the University of Liverpool Management School, summarizes, "Our study found fridge magnets can bring a past holiday experience to life more powerfully than many other types of tourist souvenir.” Byrom, along with others heading the study, noted that this type of study intent on uncovering the connection behind the impact of fridge magnet souvenirs after vacationers return home from their trip has received little attention (research), prompting this study. Given the opportunity, participants primarily recalled positive-associated memories when questioned about their collection of magnets.
