While superheroes are a significant part of pop culture, they are just fictional beings. In Atlanta, however, one man has become a real-life superhero by using magnets to rid local roads of sharp objects that could puncture tires. See how he is helping commuters around the region by keeping them safe from this dangerous (and costly!) nuisance.

Magnet Man’s Origin Story

Atlanta is known for a rich mix of cultures, numerous pro sports teams, a vibrant music scene, and, unfortunately, messy roads. Alex Beningo had the misfortune of being on the receiving end of punctured motorcycle and bicycle tires. That is when he decided to pick up scraps by hand, but it proved to be a lost cause. Instead, he used his passion for biking and some magnets to make a positive impact.

Beningo rigged up magnets and a broom brush underneath his bike trailer in hopes of picking up scraps he passed by. Not only has the idea worked, but he has become known as “Magnet Man.” He has estimated that his collection of magnets has cost him over $1,000, as he continues to add more to his setup.

Beningo said the trickiest part of his good deed is determining what to do with the debris he has collected. Some experts have told him the objects are not safe to incinerate. Scrap yards offer him less than $10 for every 100 pounds he gathers. An artist took some of his collection, yet Beningo still has bins full of junk in his home.

Even with the minor setback, he remains determined to make a difference. “When I see a little problem or something, something where I can help, I like to do it, try to do little things to alleviate unnecessary suffering that benefits everyone,” he said in a recent interview. The next part of his plan includes using a bike lane sweeper, which he says will arrive by March.
