And remember to grab a notebook to record any observations you make in your very own science journal.

*Adult supervision is required for this experiment.

Complete your supply list:

Here is what you will need:

  • Sand
  • Metal tray (can be purchased at your local dollar store)
  • One clear plastic container (check your kitchen for recycled food containers)
  • Bar magnets (1/2 “ x 1/4" x 1/4" bar magnets work nicely)
  • Clear plastic sandwich bag
  • Notebook for recording your findings

Instructions:

  1. Collect your sand sample on your metal tray. Sand from a beach, sandbox, or soil sand mixes from local ponds/lakes will also work.
  2. If your sand is not dry, place your tray in the sunlight or an oven for 30 minutes at 200 degrees Fahrenheit
  3. Place your bar magnet inside your plastic bag and seal it tightly.
  4. Next, drag your magnet inside your bag over the sand for a few moments. You will begin to notice small sand particles attaching to the outside of your plastic bag, called magnetite.
  5. Repeat this process until you have a small amount of magnetite particles in your container.
  6. Remove your magnet from the plastic bag one final time and place it against your container, moving it slowly from side to side.
  7. Possessing both a north and south pole, just like your bar magnet, you will notice the magnetite particles are attracted to your magnet, creating spikes at each end of the magnet.
  8. For even more fun, try running your magnet up the side of your container and letting go. Your magnet should remain in place, stuck to your container.
  9. Document your findings and impress your family and friends with this amazing magnetic marvel.
