The One with the Magna Doodle
The Magna Doodle, a magnetic drawing toy, was invented in 1974 and consists of a drawing board, magnetic pen and magnetic shapes. Although the Magna Doodle was a popular toy when it first hit the shelves of local toy stores in the 70’s, its popularity really spiked in the 90’s due to its recurring role in the TV series, Friends.
The Magna Doodle was one of the most famous props used in the sitcom (only second to the peephole frame). Friends fans know that the Magna Doodle drawings changed with messages that referenced to plot points, current events and inside jokes. Any diehard fan would know that the first message was introduced in the season three episode, “The One with the Hypnosis Tape” and the message was “Joey call your dad”.
When you were trying to decode and understand the message in Chandler and Joey’s apartment, did you ever think about how the Magna Doodle works? Probably not. But after reading that last sentence, are you starting to wonder, “How does it work?” How can you draw something with magnets, erase it within seconds and start all over?
How It Works
The Magna Doodle is filled with a thick, opaque, white liquid of magnetic particles of iron oxide, and is covered by the drawing display screen. The magnetophoretic display screen is where all of your drawings come to life. However, the true magic lies in the pen, specifically, the magnetic tip. The field of the magnetic pen is strong enough to infiltrate the plastic and pull the particles through the thick liquid. Since gravity cannot pull them through, the particles don’t sink back into the liquid by themselves, making your artwork stay on the screen.
When you want to start over and create something new, the magnetic eraser comes in handy. The magnetic eraser consists of a bar magnet in a plastic frame. The magnetic eraser
