Despite the rise of mp3s, vinyl sales have skyrocketed in the last few years. Convenience pleases the masses for sure, but having a record player for the sake of audio quality (and let’s face it -- music snobbery) seems to be the trend. Now, let’s add some modern flair to this vintage device. With magnets, of course. Floating Records The MAG-LEV Audio is "the world’s first levitating turntable,” perfecting the art of combining old with new. This device suspends the record platter using magnets, allowing it to magically hover in the air. While it might look like something straight out of science fiction, the MAG-LEV Audio will be available as early as 2017.   While the creators of MAG-LEV Audio have remained pretty hush-hush about the technology behind their turntable, magnet devotees like us are able to speculate as to how it works. The design is pretty straightforward and relies on diamagnetism to keep the “floating” turntable stationary. Basically, the platter is repelled from the base and thus appears to levitate. When the turntable is not in use, the platter rests on four retractable legs that extend from the base. On top of this, the turntable also features an automatically retracting cartridge to ensure your records’ longevity as well as a special system that stores power. Dubbed the “uninterruptable power supply,” or UPS, it makes sure your records never get damaged. So if you’re playing a levitating record and the power goes out, the retractable legs will automatically extend to cradle your beloved vinyl. No crashing! But How’s the Sound? Since one of the major perks of vinyl is better sound quality, it’s important for the turntable to provide major audio benefits. So what’s under the MAG-LEV Audio’s hood? Like most turntables, you can play records at 30 and 45 rpms and it comes with high-quality stylus so your records sound exactly like they’re supposed to. Another great feature is the throwback to the traditional stereo. You won’t find any bluetooth capability here. No wifi connectivity either. You certainly won’t find an internal speaker. The MAG-LEV Audio comes equipped with nothing more than standard audio jacks to plug into your receiver or preamp. A Perfect Blend of Past, Present, and Future This is music at its very finest—stripped down to its essential parts while simultaneously adding a modern, if not futuristic, touch. Those who own a record know it’s not just about being cool or being a music snob, they’re true audiophiles who want the best listening experience possible. It looks like inventors of MAG-LEV Audio feel the same way! Magnets have always been part of the stereo process. Read our earlier blog post about the magnets housed in your speakers!
