Gather these supplies:

  • Adhesive Backed Disc Magnets (½” x ⅛”)
  • Glow in the dark stars
  • String (can be any color)
  • Baking sheet or another magnetic surface
  • Printable stencils of constellations to use as a reference. If you do not have a printer, you can just have the image on a cell phone, tablet, etc.
  • Scissors
  • Disinfectant wipe

Steps

This is a low-maintenance project that kids of all ages can perform, as long as there is adult supervision. Parents and teachers can both use this craft as a way to explain the power of magnets and tie in an interesting science lesson about space.

Follow these steps to make your constellations:

  1. Determine which constellations you would like to make and print off stencils. As mentioned above, you can also save photos for reference on your device.
  2. Gather all materials.
  3. Clean off your start with a disinfectant wipe.
  4. After you figure out how many stars you will need, grab one magnet to place on each star. Peel off the adhesive and stick the magnet in the middle. Press and hold for a few seconds and then let your magnets sit for a while. Consider getting to this point and then taking a break for lunch before resuming the project.
  5. Arrange your stars on a magnetic surface in the shape of your selected constellation.
  6. Next, you will use your string to outline the constellation so your kids can see it better. To do this, measure out how much string you will need and cut it. From here, place the string under each star until your outline is complete.
  7. Now, thanks to the string outline, your child can identify the constellation and have the knowledge to look for it up above!
  8. Turn off the lights or take your baking sheet into a dark closet or room to see the stars light up like the night sky!
  9. Repeat with other constellations or create your own.
