Whether it is cars, trains, boats, or planes, kids love playing with travel-themed toys. If you are a teacher or parent looking to use this interest as a way to teach your kids something new, today’s craft is the perfect solution. This experiment can show your children just how strong magnets are while allowing them to create their own boats. Follow along as we set out on this fun adventure!

Supplies

You can purchase your magnets by visiting our online store. All magnets necessary for this project are linked in the supply list in the next section. We offer same-day shipping if your order is placed by 3 PM EST, allowing you to start your project right away. All other supplies can be purchased at your favorite craft store.

Gather these supplies:

  • Milk caps (Other plastic caps will work too)
  • Glue
  • Disc magnets (8mm x 1mm)
  • Cylinder or bar magnets
  • A shallow glass baking dish or a thin clear plastic bin
  • Sink access
  • Paper towels, rags

Setting Up Your Experiment

A teacher or adult should set this project up for young children, but you can let them conduct the experiment. Middle school-aged kids can prepare and experiment as long as there is adult supervision.

Follow these instructions:

  1. Gather all supplies.
  2. Lay your caps down and glue a disc magnet to the inside to create your boats. Allow them to dry.
  3. As the magnets dry, fill your bin or dish about halfway with water. Place it on a table or counter.
  4. Place your boats in the water (magnet side up) and start your experiment. Make sure you have some paper towels or rags nearby in case there are any spills!
  5. Have your kids hold a cylinder or bar magnet a few inches above the boats to move them along. Similarly, this project will work if they hold the magnet below the boat, underneath the dish. Have a parent help with this part.
  6. Explain to your children that the magnet field is strong enough to move the boats, even from a distance! You can also explain concepts such as repulsion and attraction while having your children take note of whether these principles change how the boats move.
