DIY Shape Flashcard Magnets
A few weeks ago, we showed you how you can help your kids learn the alphabet with our ABC Learning Bin. If you want to keep finding engaging ways to help your child’s brain stay active this summer, then this project is the perfect option. With a few supplies, you can create your own magnetic shape flashcards to help familiarize your little ones with squares, circles, and more everyday shapes.
Supplies
Purchase your magnets by visiting our online store. All magnets necessary to complete this project are linked in the full supply list below. We offer same-day shipping if your order is placed by 3 PM EST, allowing you to start creating as soon as possible. All other supplies can be purchased at your favorite craft store.
Gather these supplies:
- Disc magnets (1” x 1/16”)
- Exacto knife
- Scissors
- Corkboard
- Crafting glue
- Shape stencils or printouts
- Construction paper (Multiple colors, including white)
- Sharpies or markers that match your construction paper colors
Steps
While your children can enjoy the finished product, this project should be completed by adults or high school-aged teenagers. To make your small kids feel included during the creation process, allow them to choose the colors you use.
Follow these steps:
- Determine which shapes and colors you would like to use.
- Print our shape stencils if needed. You can also use stencils or draw them. Make sure they are all similarly sized (should fit on a 5x7 sheet of paper).
- Trace one shape onto a piece of construction paper. Repeat this step by adding other shapes to sheets of construction paper with different colors. Do not use white.
- Cut out all of your shapes with scissors.
- Grab your white construction paper and cut out a 5x7 square for each of your shapes.
- Glue a 5x7 white square to your cork and cut it out with an exacto knife once dry. Repeat until all your squares have been used.
- Next, glue each one of your shapes onto its own 5x7 card on the white construction paper side. Allow them to dry.
- After drying, write the name of each shape with a Sharpie at the bottom. The Sharpie color should match the color of your shape, if possible. This can help your children learn colors and the names of your shapes!
- Flip over your flashcards and glue a magnet onto the back of each individual card so they can all be hung up on a magnetic surface. Let them dry.
- Place your flashcards wherever you see fit and allow your child to have some fun while learning about shapes!
