Bring the magic of winter indoors with a fun and easy snowflake magnet craft! This project lets you create a customizable sliding snowflake scene using magnets. Handcrafted magnetic snowflakes can glide across a winter landscape backdrop.

This magnetic winter wonderland is perfect for decorating your fridge, office, or classroom board. It's a simple craft for adults and a playful decoration for kids, who will enjoy moving the snowflakes across the "sky."

Supplies You’ll Need

  • White cardstock or craft foam

  • Blue cardstock for the background

  • Scissors or a snowflake craft punch

  • Small adhesive backed neodymium disc magnets

  • Metal surface (refrigerator, magnetic board, filing cabinet)

  • Optional: glitter, markers, stickers

Step 1: Create Your Snowflakes

Cut out several snowflakes from white cardstock or craft foam. Decorate them with glitter, markers, or metallic pens to make them sparkle. If you'd like a shortcut, use a snowflake craft punch for perfectly shaped flakes or download and print our Snowflake Template  to print at home.

Step 2: Attach the Magnets

Attach one small neodymium disc magnet to the back of each snowflake. Reminder: children must be supervised when crafting with magnets. An adult should complete this step.

Step 3: Build Your Winter Background

Cut a rectangle of blue cardstock to act as your winter sky. Draw falling snow, mountains, pine trees, or a cozy cabin to add charm. Stick the background to your fridge or any metal surface using:

Step 4: Make the Magic Happen

Place your magnetic snowflakes onto the metal surface over your background. Now you can slide the snowflakes around to create drifting snow scenes. Kids love moving them around each day to create new winter patterns.

Optional Add-Ons

  • Add a magnetic sled or snowman character to interact with the snowflakes

  • Make a countdown-to-winter-break calendar with magnetic numbers

  • Use glow-in-the-dark paint to create a nighttime snow scene

Magnets can be dangerous. Neodymium magnets, especially, must be handled with care to avoid personal injury and damage to the magnets. Fingers and other body parts can get severely pinched between two attracting magnets. Bones can be broken by larger magnets.
