The leaves are changing and pumpkin spice is all the rage, meaning fall is officially in full swing. Today’s DIY yarn leaf magnets promise to be a hit amongst Thanksgiving guests. They are also a great craft idea for art teachers. When you are done, you can hang up these fun creations throughout your home or office and enjoy the fall feeling.

 

Supplies 

You may need to make a quick trip to a fabric store to get your yarn but you will likely have the other supplies handy. You can also pick up your magnets right here at Apex. All orders placed by 3 PM EST include same-day shipping. 

 

Gather these supplies:

 

  • Fall-colored yarn (Orange, red, yellow, etc.)
  • Tacky glue
  • Pencil
  • Disc magnets (½” x ⅛”) 
  • Scissors or a hobby knife 
  • Cardboard (Thickness does not matter) 
  • Printable leaf template or real leaves to trace. Real leaves may break apart, however, creating more cleanup. 
  • Printer (Only if you print off leaves for tracing instead of using real ones)

 

Steps to Create Yarn Leaf Magnets 

This project is fun and easy to follow. Your whole family can participate in creating these magnets but parents should perform any of the steps that require scissors or a hobby knife. Adult supervision is also required throughout the entire process.

 

Follow these steps:

 

  • Print or gather the leaves you would like to trace.
  • Grab your pencil and trace the leaf onto a piece of cardboard. 
  • Use scissors or your hobby knife to cut out the leaf tracing.
  • Glue one side of your leaf and begin laying out your yarn, starting on the outer edge of your leaf and working towards the center. You can use your pencil as a guide to keep the yarn exactly where you want it as you work around the leaf. Be sure to use multiple colors to make your craft stand out!
  • Once your yarn has dried, flip over your leaf and glue a magnet on the back.
  • After your magnet dries, hang up your magnet and enjoy!
