Magnets have been instrumental in healthcare for some time now, but their newest use could play a significant factor in the treatment of stroke patients.Dr. Hyowon “Hugh” Lee, an associate professor at Purdue University, created a magnetically controlled microbot, which removes blood that builds up in someone’s brain during a stroke. So far, the device has shown favorable results when tested on animals. In total, the treatment worked with six of the seven animals who were subjected to the treatment, which results in an 86% success rate.Researchers noted how important this was for the future of stroke care, emphasizing how difficult they are to treat. Dr. Albert Lee, of GoodmanCampbell Brain and Spine in Indiana, says that up to 50% of patients who had a brain hemorrhage die. He adds that the only treatment option at this time is clot-eliminating medication, which brings serious potential side effects. To make matters worse, the prescriptions aren’t capable of treating all types of hemorrhagic strokes. The creators of the new device say it is controlled by external magnetic fields, allowing the device to move accurately. The next step is to get the Food & Drug Administration’s approval in order to conduct a human study.
