Magnet Fisher Retrieves 1,000-Year-Old Sword
We love chronicling the unique finds of magnet fishers across the globe. Previously, we told you about the duo who returned a stolen item to its owner, the discovery of a cannon, and more. This time, we are excited to look at yet another ancient find from last year that just reached an exciting conclusion. Join us as we uncover what experts recently said about this incredible item.
An Ancient Discovery
Last November, Trevor Penny was in Oxfordshire, England seeing what he could find while magnet fishing in River Cherwell. After pulling up nothing of note for most of the day, he soon hoisted out an item that he struggled to identify. He called over a friend for their opinion, who told Penny that it appeared to be a sword.
Penny posted some photos online from multiple angles, and the consensus was that he had indeed pulled up a Viking sword. Due to the potential history of the item, he decided to contact a county liaison officer who specializes in documenting archaeological findings. From there, the sword was turned over to experts who looked to get some clarification on just how old the sword was.
The Incredible Results
After roughly four months of work, researchers have concluded that the sword could be up to 1,200 years old. This means it dates back to A.D. 850-975. At the time, Vikings regularly raided the region and fought England’s royal army. As time wore on, the army took back land that had been seized by the Vikings.
The sword in question is now in the hands of Oxford museum services after the landowner told Penny he must donate his catch. As of now, there is no official word as to where, when, or if the sword will be displayed. “It really did feel quite amazing – it’s the oldest thing found in this county magnet fishing,” Penny remarked.
