Magnets in Everyday Items: Part 1 - Cleaning Appliances
From speakers to refrigerators, there are a variety of everyday items that rely on the unique power of magnets to function properly. While some examples are obvious, you may be left to wonder how they make such a profound impact on certain devices. This week, we are taking a closer look at the special role magnets have in some of the cleaning appliances around your home.
Magic in the Motor
While you have likely used your vacuum hundreds of times, have you ever wondered if magnets could be helping with its performance? Inside, there is an electric motor hard at work as you run your vacuum across the floor. Powering that motor is a combination of permanent magnets and electromagnets. This tandem works together and produces dueling magnetic fields, which create enough force to run the motor. Once the magnets get the motor moving, it is then able to power the fan that lifts dust, dirt, and more from your floor into your vacuum.
Similarly, magnets can also be found in your washer and dryer. Once again, the magnets within the motor of both appliances create a strong magnetic field. This time, it creates the rotations that spin the laundry around and allow your clothes to be cleaned and dried efficiently. Through this significant rotational force, both machines can also drain properly as they go through their respective cycles.
