If you own an Apple iPhone or iPad, odds are that your device has overheated and stopped functioning properly for a few minutes. This can be especially frustrating if you are using your phone for navigation while on a road trip or if your phone is attempting to charge. With all of the electronic parts so close together and the phone constantly processing data, it is easy to see why the devices overheat so frequently, but now the tech giant is ready to combat this issue by using magnets.

A New Idea

Apple was recently granted a patent for a “Liquid Heat Exchanger For Electronic Device” that will keep products cool. As the name implies, the proposed system would not cool the device itself. Instead, it would simply move the heat away from essential components.

"Reducing the temperature of the heat-generating component can improve the user experience, prevent injury to a user, prevent damage to components, and promote longevity of the electronic device,” said an unnamed Apple representative.

The patent included a sketch of how the system could work, which you can view here. The illustration depicts the journey of the fluids within the device and shows how the magnet keeps everything circulating. Additionally, Apple claims that internal fans will continue to play a pivotal role in the cooling process. They also say the new system will be developed in a way that does not make any product noticeably bulkier.

There is also a second image that shows another potential process (view here). In this proposal, a charged particle will move thanks to the force of what is believed to be an electromagnetic coil that can create an alternating magnetic field.

As of now, there is no timetable for the implementation of this new technology.
