Here is what you will need:

  • Strips of newspaper
  • Large ice cube tray or other type of similar mold
  • Elmer’s glue
  • Hot glue
  • Water
  • Craft paint, glitter, stencils, etc.
  • Paintbrush
  • Plastic or styrofoam bowl
  • Disc magnets (we recommend 1/2" x 1/8” magnets for small pots and 1” 1/8" magnets for medium to large pots)
  • Scissors
  • Paper towel
  • Plants of your choice (they must be relatively small)

What to do:

  1. Begin by placing about a quarter cup of Elmer’s glue into your bowl with a small amount of water and mix well.
  2. Gather your newspaper strips or divide a full newspaper page if you have not done so already.
  3. One at a time, dip your newspaper strips into the glue mixture and place them into your mold in a crisscross pattern, pressing down securely.
  4. Repeat step 3 until you can no longer see the mold.
  5. Let your paper mache pots dry completely and remove them from the mold.
  6. Trim the edges of your planters (if needed).
  7. Apply a second layer of glue to your planters and lay them aside on a paper towel to dry.
  8. Decorate your planters with paint, glitter, or any other materials of your choice and allow them to dry fully.
  9. Glue one magnet per planter to the back of your pots with hot glue and allow them to dry.
  10. Remove your plants from their containers and shake off any excess dirt that will not fit in your paper mache pots.
  11. Press firmly, using any extra dirt to secure your plants.
  12. Using a small watering can or eye dropper, place a very small amount of water over the top of your plant and attach it to any magnetic surface in your home or office that receives a good amount of sunlight.
