Bicycle lights are essential for a safe ride. Not only do they give cyclists greater visibility at night, but they also make it easier for motorists to spot riders on the road, thereby helping to prevent a collision. However, If you leave your bike unattended, there's a good chance its light could get stolen. Considering the fact that these products come with a hefty price tag, you want to protect your investment. Yet removing and reattaching your bike light can be challenging, particularly if it's dark. raining or you're wearing gloves. So what's the solution to this dilemma? Make your bike light easily removable with strong magnets. That way, you can take your light with you after parking your bicycle. Fortunately, LifeHacker noted that it's relatively simple to make your light detachable with the right materials. As long as you use rare earth magnets, you can be sure that your lights won't fly off when you hit a bump in the road. Follow these steps and you'll be able to snap the light on and off:

Supplies

  • 1-2  1" x 1/8" Disc Neodymium Magnets (Note: You have to pick a different size magnet depending on the size of the bike, helmet, and light size)
  • 1 pack of self-setting silicone rubber, such as Sugru
  • Your helmet, bicycle, or whatever you're attaching your light to

Steps

  1. Start by squeezing a small amount of the self-setting rubber onto the back of one of your magnets and mold it into a pyramid-like mound. While several shapes will work, Instructables advised that disc magnets are ideal. You can use 1'' x 1/8'' disc neodymium magnets. If your bike light is much larger in size, you may need two magnets to make sure that it stays on the handlebars.
  2. Place a magnet onto the handlebars of your bike. You can also opt to put your light on your helmet, which some cyclists prefer for visibility. Whichever location you choose, continue to press the magnet down until some of the rubber appears around the edges of the magnet. According to Instructables, it's imperative that the handlebars are clean, or the magnet will not stick effectively.
  3. Dip your finger in a little soapy water and then rub the silicone rubber to smooth it out.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 on another magnet to mount it. Be sure that you attach this magnet with the opposing side facing outward.
  5. Leave the magnets to set for 24 hours.
  6. Once the adhesive is dry, you should be able to easily take your bike light off as well as reattach it.
