A Whale of a Magnetic Field
In previous posts, we’ve talked about the connection between animals and magnetism. Sharks, dogs, birds, and plenty of others all have pretty direct links to Earth’s magnetic field. However, there is one group of animals wherein the relationship is not as clear—some scientists don’t even think it exists.
Although quite large, there is much about their behavior that is still a mystery to researchers. Whales and dolphins spend their entire lives in the sea, crossing great distances of open ocean to reach feeding and breeding grounds. One question that puzzles scientists is how whales and dolphins are able to navigate virtually empty stretches of water. One hypothesis suggests these animals are able to use Earth’s magnetic field. However, the question remains: How are they able to do so?
Humpback Whales
Famous for their songs and symbolic of ocean conservation, humpback whales occupy every ocean in the world. Wintering along the equator where they breed and give birth, they embark on journeys to both the North and South poles to hunt for krill and small fish.
Another aspect for which the humpback is famous are the peculiar bumps around its mouth. These are called tubercles and are areas of grown-out skin that protect the whale’s tiny whiskers. The purpose of these whiskers is still not fully understood. Some theorize they are used for sensing the amount of prey around the whale. Others say these hairs act like little antennas, picking up signals from Earth’s magnetic field, aiding them in their long migrations.
This theory isn’t totally unprecedented. Another seagoing creature uses magnetic receptors to find food. Sharks rely on nodules all over their head to help steer them to food. While not related to whales, this adaptation certainly opens up the possibility that whales have similar equipment.
Dolphins
Many people know about the dolphin’s use of echolocation. A sort of sonar ability that helps them determine distances and find prey and other members of their pod. While possessing this sense is impressive enough, scientists also believe dolphins have the ability to sense Earth’s magnetic field.
Unlike their distant cousins, humpbacks, there is evidence to back up these claims. According to a study done at a French aquarium, when dolphins were presented with a magnetized device and a non-magnetized one, they were always quicker to approach the magnetic one. The conclusion is that this ability to sense magnetism probably plays a part in helping them navigate across entire oceans.
While scientists are still piecing much of this together, we remain amazed by animals’ ability to utilize magnetism. There’s even some research suggesting humans can do it, too! We’ll be sure to keep you posted. Make sure to check back with us for all the latest magnetic news and facts.
