Couple Finds $100K Through Magnet Fishing
We enjoy hearing about the positive experiences people have with magnets. Recently, we were delighted to see that magnets were making international news thanks to an incredible discovery one New York couple made while magnet fishing.
A Life Changing Find
James Kane and Barbara Agostini are no strangers to magnet fishing. The pair even has a YouTube channel chronicling their adventures, where they have found weapons, a drone, and even a motorcycle. Nothing, however, could have prepared them for what they would find at Flushing Meadows Corona Park on May 31.
During their session, the Queens couple retrieved a safe from the water. In the past, any safes they had pulled up were empty. This time, they were astonished to find roughly $100,000 inside. The duo removed all of the cash, which was in rough shape due to the water exposure, and showed their findings to local law enforcement to ensure there were no legal ramifications.
Police told James and Barbara that the safe was considered stolen property, but admitted that tracking down the legitimate owner would be impossible. "So they were like, 'Well, congratulations,' " Barbara recalled in an interview with a local news station. Officers even turned up to their home to look at the safe since they had never had a case like this before.
With an all-clear from the authorities, the pair now looks to enjoy their discovery. Before that, they have to head to the Treasury Department to have the badly damaged bills reconstructed so they can eventually be deposited.
James and Barbara look forward to their next magnet fishing adventure, which they started during COVID-19. While finding unique items is a main motivator, the environmental benefits are equally as rewarding. "People enjoy watching you take the garbage out of the water, especially in the heart of New York City," Barbara said in another interview.
