The National Football League is a business empire. In 2017 alone, they pulled in roughly $14 billion and have no plans of slowing down with commissioner Roger Goodell sharing his desire to increase annual revenue to $25 billion within ten years. Simply put, America’s love of football is no secret. However, as disturbing facts surrounding blunt force trauma and the rate of concussions within the league continue to emerge, much of the public, including the NFL’s fanbase, grows concerned. Recent studies show how continuous trauma to the head is causing Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) – a degenerative brain disease – in NFL veterans. CTE is proven to lead to dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease, and suicide.  To combat the risk, the NFL implemented a series of new rules,  but the truth is that football is an inherently violent game. Unless major, game-altering changes are made to rules and protocol, concussions will continue to occur. Some people wonder if there should be a total renovation of rules in the near future, while others fear such a change would impair the heart and soul of the game.  Fortunately, there may be a solution that would appease both parties.  According to a report published by The Society for Science and the Public, the average football player can move at a speed of 20 miles-per-hour and experience a force of 150g upon impact–it only takes 100g of force to cause a concussion. The report shows if we install rare-earth neodymium magnets (with the same pole facing outward) inside the players’ helmets, it could decrease impact by over 20g.  Based on testing, when two of these helmets collide, the magnets repel and reduce the force of collision–it’s like putting on the brakes before impact. Reports also claim that if the magnet-infused helmets were to pass field tests, they could reduce risks of concussion by a stunning 80 percent without altering the way the players navigate the field.  Testing is still in its infancy, so while it is not an immediate solution, it is a step in the right direction – toward a solution. Magnets may just be the answer to the NFL’s concussion problem.
