Did you know that without magnets, a computer's hard drive wouldn't work properly? In fact, when the hard drive spins, it uses strong magnets to achieve the speed necessary for a variety of functions. Magnets have played a role in Apple's technology in other ways as well. They are already built in to the company's smart cases and covers. However, it seems that they may eventually play an even greater role in the ever-popular iPad.

An Innovative Idea

According to AppleInsider, the company recently filed a patent application that outlined an intelligent magnetic attachment system. This proposed technology would allow iPads to connect to and communicate with other iPads and a multitude of accessories. Some of the devices that an iPad would be able to hook up to with the attachment unit include speaker docks, keyboards, touchpads, radio antennas, game controllers and cameras. This means that iPad users would no longer need to depend on a dock connector to connect their tablets to these accessories. Additionally, as the magnetic unit would attach accessories to the sides of the iPad, the tablets could still be easily mounted onto compatible stands.

New Capabilities

One especially exciting feature of this technology is the ability to couple two iPads through a magnetic hinge dock. By hooking these devices up to one another, their capabilities would expand. Also, the content displayed on one iPad's screen would also be viewable on the other. You could even use a virtual keyboard on one iPad while viewing the same image on the tablet that's connected to it. Another interesting aspect described in the patent application involves a ring magnet, which when worn, would enable you to activate features of the device by merely swiping your hand over the screen. For example, you could lock or unlock the tablet by waving your hand across the screen. This magnetic technology could even add excitement to your experience in the car or at the gym. A variety of mounts would enable you to attach an iPad to your vehicle's headrests or dashboard or any fitness equipment, such as a treadmill or stationary bike. Just because Apple has filed the patent doesn't mean that consumers will ever see this technology hit the shelves. So for now, iPad users can only hope that the company pursues its endeavors to leverage the power of magnets.
