Not many people would think to combine a pen with Rare Earth magnets to create a whole new type of writing utensil, but this is exactly what Canadian designer Andrew Gardner has done. Gardner has invented the Polar Pen, which, according to its official Kickstarter page, is both a tool and toy. What is the Polar Pen? Gardner's invention is said to be the world's first modular pen made from magnets. At the Polar Pen's core is a thin ink cartridge encased in several tubular Rare Earth magnets, shaped as cylinders. The different pieces snap together to form a metallic casing around the Polar Pen. From afar, it may look like any other pen, but there's so much more to the Polar Pen than that. What else can the Polar Pen do? If you need a stylus to use on the screens of your various mobile devices, the Polar Pen has you covered. Gardner designed a rubber tip where you can transform the pen into a stylus. When it comes to magnetism, safety has to be a priority, especially when you're dealing with strong magnets. However, Gardner also designed the Polar Pen with fun in mind. In fact, working with this pen could be downright inspirational after an extended period of writing. "If you enjoy tinkering with things or are fascinated with the power of magnets, then this product is for you," reads the Kickstarter page. "We have found many fun and functional ways of using the Polar Pen, and we are really excited to see what you will come up with." What does the future hold for the Polar Pen? The funding period for the Polar Pen will come to a close Oct. 16, 2013. At the time of this writing, the project had more than 6,275 backers. How can you make your own magnetic pen? If you're not ready for the Polar Pen, consider making your own magnetic pen with cylinder magnets, which you can stick to any magnetic surface for safekeeping. According to Lifehacker, all you need is a pen and a magnet small enough to fit inside of it. Pull the ink cartridge out, drop the magnet inside the casing, reinsert the cartridge and you're all set. The magnet inside your pen should keep it attached to any magnetic surface.
