Make Your Own Magnetic Sign
Calling all of our crafty and want to be crafty fokes! This next blog is one of our favorite ways to use magnets to decorate your home for any season in just a few minutes using cost-effective supplies. Skip the countless totes of decor that seems to grow each year and opt for an all-year-round piece that takes up less space and requires less space to store additional seasonal add-ons. With fall just a few weeks away, create your magnetic sign, starting with fun, colorful decor that will brighten any home!
*Adult supervision is required when children are present around magnets.
Pick up your supplies:
- Mod Podge
- Small wooden beads
- Wire cutters or another tool that will cut through thin sheet metal
- Sanding sponge
- Twine
- Scrapbook paper
- Two metal signs (check your local dollar store)
- Scissors
- Hot glue
- Paint brush
- Pen
- Decor items like small word signs, decor items like leaves, animals, etc.
- Decorative rope
- Sign with glass insert (at least 8.5x11 in size)
- Disc magnets (we recommend 3/8" x 1/16” magnets)
- Raffia ribbon (optional)
- Measuring tape (optional)
Get started on making your sign:
- Remove the print from your decorative sign, setting the glass insert aside. (Pro tip: save the print for a future project!).
- Remove the string hanger from your two sheet metal signs with scissors.
- Next, place your metal signs overtop of your glass piece, marking your metal signs to fit the dimensions of the glass.
- Carefully cut your metal signs along your markings accordingly. You should now have a perfect metal rectangle between both metal signs (pieces) to fit snugly inside your frame.
- Place a small amount of glue around the edges of each metal sheet and in the center, pressing facedown on your piece of glass. Exercise caution not to use too much hot glue, as this may crack your glass.
- Set your glass piece down into your frame with the plain metal side facing outward and the backside facing your cardboard insert to secure the frame.
- Your frame is now complete.
- Next, create your magnetic decor to easily interchange designs for each season or holiday.
- Ideas for decor include animal/shape cutouts that you can customize by tracing your desired piece on a sheet of scrapbook paper and using Mod Podge to secure the scrapbook cutout overtop of your piece.
- Repeat step 9 as many times as you desire with multiple shapes.
- Place a small dab of hot glue on one or more of your disc magnets to attach to each decor piece. (How many magnets you will need depends on the size/weight of your piece.)
- Trim the inside edges of your frame with rope or twine using hot glue to secure it.
- Using your twine, make the hanger for your frame by measuring the length you would like the frame to hang down (feel free to eyeball this step).
- Thread your wooden beads onto your twine until your desired length is achieved.
- Place a small dab of hot glue on each end bead to hold the chain securely in place.
- Glue the ends of your twine to the back of your frame, ensuring the glue will hold once the frame is hung.
- Keep your eyes out for additional pieces at your local dollar store that you can use to create seasonal magnetic decor to hang on your new magnetic sign!
