Whether you’re camping for a long weekend in your conversion van or embarking on a months-long trip, you deserve to have some privacy and peace of mind while living out of your van. That’s why we’re sharing a tutorial for DIYing custom window covers!

Supplies

  • Cardboard or poster board
  • Reflective insulation, such as Reflectix
  • Cotton fabric of your choice
  • Spray adhesive
  • Bias tape
  • 1” x 1/8” sewing magnets
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing machine

Steps

  1. Measure each window in your van. Once measured, create a template of each window using cardboard or poster board.
  2. After rolling out your reflective insulation, trace the window templates onto the insulation. Cut each piece out and ensure they fit within the appropriate windows.
  3. Using the same templates, trace the template onto your fabric. You’ll want to cut two of each template since you’ll need fabric for both sides of the window covers.
  4. In a well-ventilated area, spray the spray adhesive on the pieces of reflective insulation and slowly place the fabric on top of each one. Once dry, flip them over and repeat on the other side.
  5. Pin the bias tape around the edge of each window covering so that the fabric is tucked underneath.
  6. Sew around the window covers to permanently attach the bias tape. Then, remove the pins.
  7. Using extra fabric left over, create pockets for your sewing magnets. Cut strips long and wide enough to fold over a magnet. Pin these to the window covers. Depending on the weight of your window covers, you’ll want to place pockets every few inches.
  8. Sew a magnet to each pocket.
  9. Sew the magnet pockets on the window cover.
