No matter what idea comes to your mind, we are happy to work with you and use our knowledge of magnets to bring your vision to life. Recently, Joshua Kime created a chessboard that was made from natural terrain and resembled a battlefield. While no stranger to crafting one of a kind creations, Kime said this board came to be by sheer coincidence.  “I was on a hike one day and noticed a piece of wood that was about 12”x36” but only about an inch thick. This piece of wood wasn’t milled or anything so in addition to its odd dimensions, it obviously also wasn’t flat. I took it home trying to think of what I could use it for then one day I saw a chessboard with a sort of live edge border and the idea just popped into my head,” said Kime via an email.  While he was determining all of the supplies he would need for the project, he realized that magnets would play a crucial role. After some searching online, Joshua stumbled upon Apex.  “It was just one of the sites that came up in a google search and the website seemed legitimate and professional so I perused and reached out to the customer support for help, which ended up being a decision maker,” said Kime.  He credited Faye from our office for helping him with numerous decisions and for going above the call to offer assistance.  “She did the best she could to answer my initial questions, asked follow-up questions, and then was nice enough to send a couple samples when I had responded with more details,” Kime continued.  Once his shipment arrived, Joshua used the magnets to keep the chess pieces in place on the slopes⁣⁣⁣ of the walnut and Maplewood chessboard. The final product was actually his third attempt at completing the project. By the final attempt, however, making the piece wasn’t so complicated. “I think the hardest part of making the board itself was doing it without a thickness planer. Not having a planer resulted in some corners of the grid not being perfectly aligned, which is a flaw I can live with as a proof of concept, but if I make another one, I’ll definitely be more scrutinizing (and buy a planer),” he said.  As for making another chessboard, Joshua said that it depends on this one’s reception. So far, the board has received a number of positive comments on his Facebook post, and is a fan favorite in our office, too!  “I’m hoping others like this idea so that I have an excuse to make more.”
