Are you an avid podcast listener? We’ve rounded up some of the most interesting episodes on magnetism. These episodes from a variety of podcasts dive deep into magnetism, from explaining how magnetic fields work to why magnets even exist. Throw one of these on during your commute and let us know what you think!  The Science of Everything Podcast This podcast covers topics in the natural sciences all the way to the social sciences. The main focus? The scientific method’s effects on the world around us. Episode 61: Magnetism talks about the basic concepts of magnetism, including magnetic fields, magnetic poles, and electromagnets Astronomy Cast In Astronomy Cast, hosts Fraser Cain (from Universe Today) and Dr. Pamela L. Gay explore what is known—and what is being discovered—about our Universe. This avid astronomy lover and astronomer bring fact-based information to their listeners in weekly discussions on astronomical topics ranging from planets to cosmology. Episode 42: Magnetism Everywhere talks all about the magnetic fields that surround planets, stars, and galaxies from the space gurus themselves. Stuff You Should Know The idea for this podcast originated from Charles (Chuck) Bryant’s boss at HowStuffWorks (HSW) and HSW senior writer Josh Clark bonding over dive bars and existentialism. The pair cover any and all topics of “stuff people should know,” giving random facts and explaining marvel discoveries that go unnoticed by the general public. If you’ve read this blog post about Maglev trains or this blog post about the technology behind them and were confused after, the episode How Maglev Trains Work might be able to help.  Another great episode from SYSK is How Magnets Work. Hosts Josh and Chuck understand that we all know what magnets are. In this episode, they’re sharing some lesser-known facts about why magnets even exist and even how they work. The Naked Scientist Based at Cambridge University's Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), the Naked Scientists are a team of scientists, doctors, and communicators whose passion is to help the general public to understand and engage with the worlds of science, technology, and medicine. Their episode On the Flip Side - Earth’s Magnetic Field looks at the magnetic field keeping our planet safe. You’ll find out how the field is generated and whether or not some animals can actually see it. We’ve written about this phenomenon before in sharks, fish, moths, and even humans. History of Earth Host Richard Gibson described the history of planet Earth every day for a year in 2014. Now, the podcast continues on a weekly basis going over the geology of Earth—from the origin of the planet to the origin of mankind. You might already know the earth’s magnetic field isn’t smooth and that it changes over time. Episode 385: Magnetic Field Anomaly dives into some of these anomalies in the earth’s ever-changing tendencies in magnetic field intensity. Science Focus Podcast Science Focus Podcast is your one-stop for the brightest names in science and technology, covering the latest news, ideas, and breakthroughs from the inner workings of the human brain to how we’ll conquer space. The episode What if Earth’s magnetic field died? dives into what would it mean if Earth’s magnetic field disappeared and what intergalactic threats we would be vulnerable to because of it.  If you can’t get enough of this magnetic information, head to our neodymium magnet information category on the blog.
