If you’ve read any of our previous blogs on simple magnet hacks and DIY crafts, you know that magnets are a great way to keep your home organized, safe, and efficient, but we’ve also found that magnets can help you save money around the house! These easy and affordable projects can make a difference in your heating or air conditioning bills and will keep your appliances and equipment lasting longer, cutting down on your annual spend. Read on for three ways to use magnets to help save you money!

Protect Your Water Heater

Corrosion in a water heater occurs when water and oxygen mix and come into contact with metal. Without regular maintenance to your water heater, it can begin to corrode. When this happens, it will weaken the metal of the tank. Corrosion can also affect effectiveness if you have a gas-power water heater. To combat this with magnets, place a 1/2”x1/8”x1/2” block magnet on the freshwater intake pipe. Why? This magnet will catch metallic calcium particles. We recommend using magnets with a pull force of five pounds or more to be effective.

Keep Your Tractor Good as New

If you own a tractor to mow your lawn, there’s a chance that you will end up with metal in the oil --which is common and occurs due to the grinding pistons. To combat this, you can use ceramic magnets that will attract the steel bits in the oil. Simply place the 1/2"x1/4" magnets in the oil pan and clean them out each time you change the oil in your tractor. This should be done at least once a year or every 20-50 hours of use.

Ensure Your Doors are Shut Tight

Did you know that heating and cooling combined make-up roughly half of the total energy used in your home? If you’re experiencing a draft due to a sliding glass door that doesn’t latch properly, you’re likely losing money as heat or air conditioning escape your otherwise enclosed home. With two 14mm x 2mm disc magnets and some super glue, however, you can easily solve this pesky issue! Just glue one disc magnet to the door and another to the door frame where the first magnet hits it—this way, the magnets will attract one another when you slide the door shut.
