Researchers from the Science and Technology Facilities Council have designed a zero-power tuneable optics magnet (ZEPTO) that requires no electrical power. The magnet is now being put to the test in a particle accelerator, and if everything works as planned, the future of energy research could be changed in a number of ways. Testing Particle accelerators use magnetic fields to boost particles to high energies and create a beam that can be used for research. These machines require a lot of electricity to function, but this new electromagnet may actually produce an equally powerful magnetic field without relying on any sort of power source. Additionally, the magnet will save roughly 300 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere each year, according to data from its initial tests.
