A common misconception in the field of chiropractic, doctors not only rely on their traditional skills of spinal manipulation, rather they employ a variety of techniques and methods to treat patients depending on their specific needs and condition(s). These supplemental treatments often include electrical muscle stimulation and ultrasound. Primarily utilized in the fields of orthopedics and mental health, magnetic therapy, otherwise known as Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy (PEMF), has proven a highly successful alternative to more traditional methods of treating broken bones, wounds, and even severe cases of depression.  Given its successes in other areas of the medical field, researchers and chiropractors are recognizing the immense potential magnetic therapy has in their own field, particularly when treating cases of acute and chronic pain.

How PEMF Therapy Works

Our bodies are essentially a giant magnetic storm with electrical currents controlling every cell, nerve, muscle… every function and fiber of our being. As famously noted by Jerry Tennant, Dr. and author of, "Healing is Voltage", "All life is energy, and all energy is electromagnetic." Essentially, Tennant theorized that pain, i.e., disease, is always signaled by a low electrical charge that will persist unless we can raise the voltage enough to promote the regrowth of new cells and stop the decrease in oxygen levels. That is precisely the root science behind PEMF therapy.  By sending ultrashort voltage pulses, in excess of 40 thousand volts, through the affected area within billionths of a second, the charge is actually capable of bypassing the cell’s exterior, directly targeting the vital structures within. The effects of this powerful, yet safe charge, are extraordinary, prompting the creation of a new field of study called Bioelectrics, aptly defined as the study of high voltage engineering and cell biology. With continued research and support received across a wide spectrum of medical disciplines, Bioelectrics has the potential to redefine long-trusted treatment methods, opting for what can only be considered by many as science fiction.

Applications in Chiropractic

Known as a "Magnetesphere," chiropractors are now using PEMF Therapy to simultaneously deliver electrical charges to a patient’s entire body within seconds. When the electric charge passes over an area where the patient is experiencing pain, ions are activated within the body to bring nutrients and restore proper blood supply, "recharging" the cells in the affected area. Simply put, PEMF is intended to boost your body’s natural healing defenses by strengthening the cell’s internal mechanisms to ward off disease and fight inflammation.  In correlation with traditional chiropractic manipulation, researchers are beginning to see substantial improvements, even garnering the attention of Dr. Oz, who featured PEMF Therapy on his Emmy Award-winning program, The Dr. Oz Show. As this technology continues to develop, opening the door to additional visibility and funding, experts expect a rise in adoption rates of PEMF Therapy across the country and, eventually, the world.
