Mini Magnetic Robots May Revolutionize Manufacturing
These microrobots could be mistaken for tiny insects because they are so small, but don’t let their size fool you. The research organization SRI International has been working on their magnetic mini-robot technology called Diamagnetic Micro Manipulation for DARPA’s Open Manufacturing Program. According to Wired, Darpa’s vision is to use the bots to "lower the cost and speed of delivery of high-quality manufactured goods".
How It Works
Using principles of magnetism, electromagnetic pulses are sent through circuit boards, which allows magnetic microrobots to be steered and programmed to perform various functions. Some of those functions include climbing walls, traveling in any direction, and performing programmed movements. Watching them in action is comparable to watching a micro-scale factory assembly line.
Additionally, they are made of low-cost magnets, making them relatively cost-effective. They have the potential to create a whole new approach to manufacturing through the production of complex and small structures using faster and more precise techniques than conventional mass production processes. Experts predict that some possible applications for the robots include: pick-and-place manufacturing, rapid prototyping, electronics manufacturing, and more.
