Magnets are a common item that many of us take for granted, ourselves included at times! Below, we’re highlighting a few common ways magnets are utilized and sharing what it would look like if these magnetic fields and inventions were to disappear. Hint: it’s not a world we want to live in! Wildlife The Earth’s magnetic field helps various species migrate and even is responsible for successful reproduction. Travel Could you imagine a world without the invention of the compass or GPS? The compass dates back to the Han Dynasty in China between 300 and 200 BC. Before this groundbreaking invention, navigation was determined by the familiarity of landscape, landmarks, and celestial bodies like stars. Electronics It shouldn’t come as a shock that many of our daily used electronics have magnets utilized in their creation. One common type is electromagnets, which create a magnetic field when electricity is applied to them. Electric motors containing magnets can be found in our laptops, smartphones, cars, televisions, and even vacuums! A world without magnets would be a world of inconvenience.  Our Own Survival The Earth’s magnetic field is practically a barrier protecting us all from the dangers of space. Think of the magnetic field as a shell to an egg. This layer of protection keeps out harmful ultraviolet radiation and solar flares that would leave the planet uninhabitable without it.
